June Update - 2023

This June update almost turned into a July update! What a crazy few months it has been. We're excited to tell you a bit about what we've been up to, so feel free to microwave some popcorn and read on! Nhulunbuy Trip

Living remote is hard. Living remote with children is harder. Living remote with children, trying to keep them entertained as you attend a weekend conference with the rest of your colleagues and their children is almost impossible. For this very reason, a small team of us from Mareeba Baptist Church went up to Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land earlier this month to help out with the kids' program at the MAF/Pioneers combined conference.

We very much enjoyed our time hanging out with the children and teens, and were able to catch up with some of the adults in between sessions as well. Barbecues were had, relationships built, and even Colin Buchanan managed to make an appearance.

Colin put on a concert was while we were in Nhulunbuy. It was held in the town hall where I (Michael) saw him as a kid!

Mid-concert dinner: a great opportunity to talk to adults after hanging out with kids all day!

The theme of the kids program was following Jesus: walking by faith and walking in love. Naomi had great fun as a puppeteer!

Arnhem Land sunsets are something to behold... even better at a beach BBQ!

Instructor Rating

The last three months have seen me undertake training to obtain my instructor rating. Having this rating will allow me to conduct flight training in Mareeba for the next two years. Not for the faint of heart, this course stretched me beyond any anticipation, and I learned so much. In reality, the learning has only begun! I am very excited to join the team of very experienced instructors at the training centre and invest in the students who come through our doors.

Naomi's World

I (Naomi) have had another busy, fun-filled, interesting term at school! We've had an influx of new students join our primary and secondary classes. As a result, we've made the decision to create another upper primary class. Instead of a 3/4 and 5/6 class, we'll have three classes for the rest of the year: 3/4, 4/5 and 6. I will have the privilege of teaching the Year 6 class of 12 students which I'm very much looking forward to (I've had the 5/6 class for the past year and a half). Part of this change involves moving classrooms which has been a little stressful. A highlight, however, was travelling to Cairns with a teacher friend to buy some furniture and stationery to use in my new room!

In September this year, I will be travelling to Vanuatu on a mission trip organised in conjunction with a Christian medical centre called Medical Santo. This centre is based in Vanuatu and is a not-for-profit organisation which provides primary health services to the local people there. We have both youth and adults joining the mission trip; my role will involve running a Bible study and youth ministry program for these youth, as well as some local youth living in Santo. Part of our outreach will involve visiting some schools and blessing the children there. I'm excited to see how God uses us to show His love to the people of Vanuatu.

Ministry Partnership

Time and time again, God is showing us that He and He alone is in control. We have been blessed to receive 73% of the ongoing funding we need to remain on the field, all given by faithful friends and family.

At times this mountain to climb has seemed far too steep and rocky, but we serve a faithful God. If you have responded to his prompting and started sponsoring us, thank you. If you haven't yet, there is more than enough room with 27% still to raise! Follow the link below if you are interested in financially supporting us:

Prayer/Praise

Please join us in thanking God for:

  • a safe and enjoyable trip up to Arnhem Land.

  • another great term at school for Naomi.

  • a successful instructor rating test for Michael.

  • the opportunity Naomi has to travel to Vanuatu in September.

Pray with us for:

  • continued progress in our Ministry Partnership journey.

  • a great start to the term for both of us.

  • continued relationship building where God has us planted in this season.

  • health and safety for Naomi and the team while they're in Vanuatu, and opportunities to openly share the gospel.

That's all from us this quarter! Until next time.

In Christ,

Michael and Naomi

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6

We were excited to visit the MAF hangar in Arnhem Land and it was Naomi's first time there!
